Protect Your Home on the Fourth of July

The fourth of July is an exciting day for families across the country! It’s a day filled with barbecues, gathering of family and friends, backyard games and more. An Independence Day staple is the fireworks and as a roofing company, we can’t help but think of protecting your roof. Here are some precautions to think about if you (or your neighbor) are planning a fireworks display.
Clean the Debris
One of the most flammable things on your roof is the debris. Pine needles, leaves, and small branches should all be cleared off of your roof and gutters. If a lingering spark falls down, it could easily grab on to any debris on your roof.
Trim Overhanging Branches
We recommend trimming the branches that hang over your home for a few reasons! First, when there are fireworks involved, trimming the branches will minimize the risk of a limb catching on fire and landing on your home. Secondly, it’s important to keep the area above your roof clear because of all the seasonal storms that roll through.
Inspect the Roof
Underneath your roof’s shingles are a layer of roofing felt paper. This is a layer of protection between the roof deck and the shingles. When a shingle gets detached or there is severe damage, it leaves the felt paper exposed to the elements. This, as you can imagine, is not ideal when there are fireworks, as even a spark could destroy your home. We recommend hiring professionals, such as MLM, to perform a routine roof inspection so we can ensure that there are no missing shingles or damage.
